Horizontal Wall Art

Horizontal wall art is wider than it is tall — the natural choice for the widest walls in a home: above a sofa, a bed, a console or a mantel, where a vertical piece would look stranded. As a rule, size it to about two-thirds the width of the furniture below and hang it at eye level.

Printed to order on gallery-grade canvas, framed or stretched. For tall, narrow walls see vertical wall art.

How to choose horizontal wall art

Horizontal wall art runs from wide 2:1 landscapes and abstracts to long, thin 3:1 panoramics. The proportion matters more than the subject: a horizontal line settles a room and gives a seating area a top edge.

Size the piece to about two-thirds the width of the furniture below and hang it with the center at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor. An 84-inch sofa wants about 56 inches of art — a single wide canvas such as a 20x60 or 40x60 inch print, or two pieces hung a few inches apart. Long, thin panoramics suit narrow strips of wall: above a headboard, along a stair landing, or over a run of kitchen cabinets.

Every piece is printed to order on gallery-grade canvas, framed or stretched, in a full range of sizes. For placement help, read the wall art size guide, and for tall walls browse vertical wall art.

Frequently asked questions

What size horizontal wall art should go above a sofa?
Size it to about two-thirds the width of the sofa. An 84-inch three-seat sofa wants roughly 56 inches of art, such as a 20x60 or 40x60 inch canvas hung horizontally, or two pieces hung a few inches apart. Leave 6 to 8 inches of clear wall between the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.
What is the difference between horizontal and panoramic wall art?
Horizontal covers everything wider than it is tall, usually a 2:1 or 3:2 shape. Panoramic is the long, thin end of that range, closer to 3:1, made for narrow strips of wall where a standard rectangle would look stranded — above a headboard, along a stair landing, or over a run of cabinets.
How high should I hang a horizontal canvas?
Hang it with the center at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Over furniture, keep 6 to 8 inches of clear wall between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one arrangement.
Can I hang two horizontal pieces side by side?
Yes. Two matching canvases hung 2 to 3 inches apart read as a single wide piece and often suit a long sofa better than one oversized canvas. Size the pair so the total width is about two-thirds the width of the furniture below.
