Choosing wall art to hang above a bed

Wall art above the bed has one job: to settle the room. It is the last thing you see at night and the first thing in the morning, so this collection leans to calm, low-horizon landscapes, soft abstracts and muted neutrals.

Proportion is what separates a bedroom that looks finished from one that does not. Size a single horizontal canvas to about two-thirds the width of the headboard: around 60 inches over a king, 40 inches over a queen, hung 6 to 8 inches above the headboard rather than the pillows. Three smaller pieces spaced 2 to 3 inches apart work on a wider wall; a single small canvas floating over a king headboard is the most common mistake in the room.
